VESPRParticipant Information

Creativity and bilingualism

Thank you for considering taking part in this study. Prior to your decision, it is crucial for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please read carefully and sign below to show that you understand and consent to taking part. If you have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact me via email, iot0082@my.londonmet.ac.uk.

The research can only be completed on a laptop or a desktop computer. As you will have limited time for each trial, please make sure there are no distractions around you as you undertake the study. This study will require around 20 minutes to be completed. After the experiment is completed, you will be given a debriefing form explaining in more detail the purpose of this study.

To participate in this study, you will have to solve a series of trials. Before you begin the trials, you must complete some demographic questions (nationality, gender, age, employment status, etc.). You will not be asked for any information that identifies you such as your name, date of birth or contact details.

Participants who do not speak English as their first language must additionally complete the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q).

The experiment consists of three separate tasks:

The first task is known as the Stroop task, and it consists of presenting colour names one by one. A compatible or incompatible ink colour will be used for printing the colour names. The goal is to name the colour of the word rather than the word written as quickly as possible.

The second task employed is called Remote Associate Tasks (RAT). You will have 15 trials, and you will have 30 seconds to respond to each. As for each, you will see three cue words, and you will be asked to think of a fourth word that connects all three. For instance, for the words "cottage"; "swiss"; "cake", a valid response may be "cheese" (i.e. cottage cheese; swiss cheese; cheesecake).

The third task is known as the Alternative Uses Test (AUT; Guilford, 1967). You will have three trials, each with two minutes. One cue word will be presented on the screen, and you will be asked to list as many uses for that word as possible.

I will not be requesting any identifying information from you, such as your name or date of birth. That means that even though I will see your answers, I will not know that they are your answers (the data set will be anonymous). The data collected is in strict accordance with the University’s ethical standards and will be strictly confidential.

Your answers in this experiment will be submitted via an online platform called PsychoPy.Your data will be stored on an Excel spreadsheet. Data will be stored on a secure password-protected device that only I have access to. All data gathered will be kept secret, which means that no one other than me and the university markers will have access to it. The headline results will be presented in a poster and report format for other students and academics to review and may also be presented at academic conferences or in an academic journal or book.

GDPR statement

Any data that can identify you will be processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2016 (GDPR). If you would like more information about how your data will be processed in accordance with GDPR please visit the following link: http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/about/policies/data-protection/

You are under no obligation to participate. It is entirely up to you whether or not to engage, and there will be no negative consequences if you do not. If you do decide to proceed, you can withdraw at any time throughout the research; you are not required to submit your answers at the completion. You cannot withdraw once you finish the study and submit your responses at the end since your data is anonymous and I am unable to identify the answers that correspond to you. As a result, it is essential that you are comfortable with participating before submitting them. After the experiment is completed, you will be given a debriefing form explaining in more detail the purpose of this study.

There are no obvious costs associated with taking part in this study, either financial or emotional.

You will not be rewarded for your participation in this study. You should not incur any additional expenses to participate, but if you do, you will not be compensated. You should face no negative effects as a result of your participation in this study.

There is a chance that you may not be able to answer the tasks and you may find that frustrating, but we do not anticipate this to be any more difficult than any takes you will encounter of the course of normal life.

This type of study will provide valuable insight into whether bilinguals are more creative than monolinguals due to their ability to speak two languages.

If you are interested in the study's findings, they will be available in mid-May 2023. Please email me at iot0082@my.londonmet.ac.uk and I will happily share them with you. Individual results will not be accessible, unfortunately.

If you are unsatisfied with any of my responses, you may contact my supervisor for this project who is Amanda Holland, a.holland1@londonmet.ac.uk.

I have read the information above and I consent voluntarily to be a participant in this study.
