Project Title: The impact of language brokering on emotional reactivity at conscious and unconscious levels of processing.

You are being invited to take part in a research study being conducted by Texas A&M University. You are being asked to read this form so that you know about this research study. The information in this form is provided to help you decide whether or not to take part in the research. If you decide you do not want to participate, there will be no penalty to you, and you will not lose any benefit you normally would have.

WHY IS THIS BEING DONE?

The purpose of this study is to examine how people who have informal experience in translation/interpretation will experience emotional information differently across languages.

WHY AM I BEING ASKED TO BE IN THIS STUDY?

You are being asked to be in this study because you were selected to be a possible participant and you may have signed up or volunteered to participate in the experiment. This is because you are 18 years and older, are able to read and write in Spanish, and identify as Latinx/Hispanic.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE ASKED TO BE IN THIS STUDY?

Approximately 225 people will be enrolled in this study.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVE TO BEING IN THIS STUDY?

If you are coming from the psychology subject pool and choose not to participate in this experiment, you can take an alternative writing assignment that will be provided by your 107-class or other class instructor.

WHAT WILL I BE ASKED TO DO IN THIS STUDY?

Your participation in this study will last up to 60 minutes and includes one visit. The procedures you will be asked to perform via two online platforms (Qualtrics and Pavlovia) are described below.

The following procedures are experimental: If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your language background and knowledge, cultural identity, and cultural values. You will also listen to some vignettes in both Spanish and English depicting everyday situations some people may encounter in life, which you will be asked to rate in both Spanish and English. Lastly, you will complete a behavioral task where you will be asked to provide a response by pressing a key on your keyboard in response to words presented in both Spanish and English. After this task you will complete a questionnaire about anxiety and depression as well as provide some verbal responses (via submission of an audio recording) in both Spanish and English.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO ME?

This is a research study that involves questions related to the some sensitive topic that may cause emotional distress due to questions dealing with depression or anxiety. It is possible we will not view your responses for several days or weeks after you complete the surveys. Additionally, some of the language in the survey instruments may be deemed as vulgar or in bad taste. As researchers, we do not provide mental health services. However, we want to provide you with contact information for available resources, should you need assistance at any time: 1800-662-HELP(4357)or 1800-487-4889.

ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO ME?

There may be no direct benefit to you by being in this study, however, you will be helping us to better understand how people experience emotions in two different languages.

WILL THERE BY ANY COST TO ME?

Aside from your time and need to use internet connectivity (everything is online), there are no costs for taking part in the study.

WILL I BE PAID TO BE IN THE STUDY?

You will receive the equivalent of one hour of research credit for participating in this study if you are an undergraduate student participating in this study for course credit. If you choose not to participate in an experiment, you can take an alternative writing assignment that will be provided by your 107-class or other instructor. If you are volunteering to participate in this study, no compensation will be provided but you may opt to participate in a drawing for 3 gift cards ($25 value).

WILL INFORMATION FROM THIS STUDY BE KEPT PRIVATE?

The records of this study will be kept private. No identifiers linking you to this study will be included in any sort of report that might be published. Research records will be stored securely, and only Jyostna Vaid and Karina Febre will have access to the records.

Information about you will be stored in a locked file cabinet and computer files protected with a password. Information about you will be kept confidential to the extent permitted or required by law. People who have access to your information include the Principal Investigator and research study personnel. Representatives of regulatory agencies such as the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) and entities such as the Texas A&M University Human Subjects Protection Program may access your records to make sure the study is being run correctly and that information is collected properly.

By participating in the interview(s) or completing the survey(s), you are giving permission for the investigator to use your information for research purposes.
