Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Department of Psychology, Health and Professional Development Oxford Brookes University, Headington, OXFORD OX3 0BP.

Researcher: Kitty Garrett, Undergraduate, Email: 19013863@brookes.ac.uk

Supervisor: Luci Wiggs, Email: lwiggs@brookes.ac.uk

Please take time to read the following information carefully.

What is the purpose of the study?

This study is looking at the links between sleep and creative behaviour. In particular, we are investigating whether creativity is predicted by people’s amount of sleep, the quality of their sleep and their sleep hygiene practices. Sleep hygiene refers to the sleep-related behaviours and practices which are thought to influence the quality and quantity of sleep (e.g. where you sleep, your sleep routines).

Why have I been invited to participate?

We are inviting any adult, aged 18 years or more to take part. We hope that in total about 200 people will complete the survey.

Do I have to take part?

No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to provide your consent, and you can keep, or download, a copy of this form if you wish. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw unprocessed data and without giving a reason, before your data is submitted.

What will happen to me if I take part?

If you choose to take part in the study, by clicking on the box below to show you consent to take part, you will be presented with an online questionnaire, which should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. The questionnaire will contain questions about your sleep, your regular sleep practices and your creative behaviours. Although the questionnaire is completed anonymously we will also ask for a few details about you (your age and gender) just to describe the people who take part in the study.

What are the possible benefits or disadvantages of taking part?

There are no direct benefits of taking part in this study. The main benefit is for the researcher who is completing this research as part of her studies in Psychology. However, we hope that you will find the questions interesting and that outcomes of this study will help to further develop research on this topic area. It is possible that some people might find it upsetting to answer questions about their sleep. If this is a difficult topic for you, it may be best not to complete the questionnaire. If you do take part you can pause and take a break at any stage and can withdraw from the study at any time before your data is submitted, by closing your web browser. Because the study is anonymous it will not be possible to withdraw once your data are submitted.

Will what I say in this study be kept confidential?

Yes. You will not be asked to give any information that could be used to identify you personally (e.g., your name, date of birth, IP address). Confidentiality, privacy and anonymity will be ensured in the collection, storage and publication of research material (subject to legal limitations). Research data will be stored in Qualtrics and Google Drive, for which the University has security agreements or uploaded to a repository so that it can be shared for teaching and research purposes.

What should I do if I want to take part?

If you would like to take part, please click to show that you consent to take part then click on the Continue to Questionnaire button at the bottom of this page before proceeding to the questionnaire.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

The results of the research will be used in an undergraduate psychology dissertation. If a publication is planned, the data generated by the study will be retained by the supervisor in accordance with the University's policy on Academic Integrity and may be kept securely for a period of ten years after the completion of the research project. If no publication is proposed the data will be deleted by 31 December 2022.

For the purposes of carrying out this Survey, the University uses the survey tools provided by Qualtrics with whom the University's Faculty of Health and Life Sciences holds an agreement. There is always a certain element of risk of data loss when data is collected and processed in an internet environment. This risk cannot be eliminated entirely and participants consenting to take part in the survey need to be aware of this risk. However, personal data will be minimised to the extent possible for the survey and the University believes that Qualtrics offers sufficient guarantees to keep the data secure while it is being processed. These security obligations are set out in the agreement between Qualtrics and the University.

Further information about Qualtrics can be found on the following web site: http://qualtrics.com/

I have read the information above and I consent voluntarily to be a participant in this study.
